ARRIS to demonstrate power of SDN and NFV at IBC 2014 and SCTE 2014

11 Sep 2014

Video content delivery is becoming more complex than ever. And, service providers are exploring how best to evolve the delivery of all of this content, as consumers’ video appetite only grows. As we noted in our May 2014 Consumer Entertainment Index, while the living room is still the center of household entertainment, the proliferation of connected devices and the growing popularity of streaming content is mobilizing consumers within the home. And it shows no signs of slowing down.

Enter Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software-Defined Networks (SDNs).

ARRIS is exploring the benefits and applicability of both NFV and SDNs for a number of network control and data-plane functions. We believe NFV and SDN Controllers may prove invaluable in permitting operators to increase feature velocity, simplify network management, and capitalize on the cost benefits of elasticity within virtualized environments.

Over the course of IBC 2014 and SCTE 2014, we will demonstrate three advanced network functions implemented with a common SDN platform:

  • Dynamic bandwidth management for individual users, regardless of where they are on the network – something we are calling Bring Your Own Service (BYOS)
  • Protection from distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks using an NFV firewall
  • Dynamic bandwidth management for nDVR playback (introduced at SCTE)
  • The deployment of an open source SDN platform enables service providers to abstract complicated north-bound interfaces and use simpler HTTP-based, RESTful management for network functions. Our IBC demonstrations use OpenDaylight, an open source SDN platform able to translate complex interfaces like PCMM to a web-based applications platform.

ARRIS continues to collaborate with our customers to find the right video content delivery path, and NFV and SDNs are two worthy virtualization options for consideration. Both can positively impact service provider CAPEX and OPEX – therefore, it’s worth exploring if these options are right for you. Stop by ARRIS booth this week at IBC 2014 in Hall 1, Stand D31, or from September 22-25th at SCTE Cable Tech EXPO 2014 at stand #1764to see these demonstrations.
